High School Seniors Host Holocaust Survivors for Chanukah
Elana Rubinstein and Rabbi Baruch Plotkin
Many know that the holiday of Chanukah is surrounded by the theme of miracles as well as the victory of the Maccabees, a small group of men over the Greek-Syrian army. For many, the custom of giving presents to those you love is a true highlight of this holiday.
This week, Claire and Emmanuel G. Rosenblatt High School seniors hosted Holocaust Survivors from Century Village for a Chanukah celebration of laughter and latkes, candle lighting and voices joined in song.
For the students and 25 survivors that participated in this program, the biggest gift of the day and Chanukah was being present with each other. The students and survivors shared their life experiences and discussed how the few people left in this world with pure intentions, will continue to light up a world full of great darkness for a positive future.
The student’s shared with the survivors about their successes in school, plans for the future as well as their upcoming trip in the spring to attend The March of the Living. As the survivors imagined where they were 75 years ago, to seeing where our Jewish leaders of tomorrow are today was so humbling for each of them. Our students instilled hope for the future and the Jewish people as they will continue to tell the story and assure that this will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. The smiles on their faces was truly the biggest gift DKJA could have ever asked for this Chanukah.
