11/13/2020 Head of School Message

Dear DKJA Community,

This week, our school joined the global Jewish community in mourning the passing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks z”l. In addition to being a renowned scholar and inspirational leader, Rabbi Sacks was a tremendous advocate and supporter of Jewish day schools and often spoke about the impact these schools have on the future of Judaism. His passion for Jewish education is part of the legacy he leaves behind for future generations. Baruch dayan emet. May his memory be a blessing.

Our Middle and High School students looked back this week at the horrific time in history known as Kristallnacht. In the Middle School, students led a remembrance ceremony during their NJHS assembly, while Rosenblatt High School students welcomed both a Holocaust survivor to share his first-hand experience and a speaker from Stand With Us to lead a discussion on Israeli advocacy. Our students continue to make us proud as they embrace their heritage and vow to “never forget.”

Veterans Day observations and activities were abundant at DKJA this week as students in different grades participated in discussions, wrote letters, and listened to guest speakers. On behalf of everyone at DKJA, we are grateful to all our veterans who have served our country with honor and dignity.

Yesterday, the DKJA Guidance Department hosted the first of several virtual discussions offering support and guidance to parents. During these unprecedented times, we believe it is more important than ever to focus on the emotional health of our community. Please be on the lookout for more information on upcoming events. Thank you to Dr. Ryan Seidman for leading this valuable informational session.

I continue to walk through the building daily and enjoy watching students in all grade levels actively engaged in their learning. While this year looks different from years past, my visits to virtual classes find the same level of student excitement and engagement as the in-person classes. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished this year and look forward to sharing new initiatives and programming as we move forward in the school year. Lower School students are in for a fun surprise as we begin a monthly Head of School Zoom Storytime. Stay tuned for details!

Wishing you a safe, relaxing, and healthy weekend.

Shabbat Shalom,
Helena Levine
