Expressing Yourself Through Dance at DKJA!

Donna Klein Jewish Academy’s dance program is run by mobile dance company, Mizfit Inc. Owner, Nicole Rosen is a proud DKJA parent. Nicole started her dance company 12 years ago during the obesity epidemic to encourage children to not look at exercise as a chore, rather an exciting lifestyle and activity.

Dance is a wonderful way of keeping fit and allowing children to find and improve upon new skills. Team sports and athletics are not for every child, so dance provides them the opportunity to develop many life skills which they can apply as they grow and develop.  It may come as a surprise to discover just how valuable an early dance education can be to the many aspects of a child's life.

Almost all children enjoy dancing regardless of ethnicity or culture, as it is highly physical and will increase stamina, strength and flexibility in addition to improving co-ordination and balance. It can even correct poor posture and increase cardiovascular health. For these reasons, Mizfit aims to change conventional perceptions about exercise and make a dynamic, desirable and entertaining dance class.

Mizfit has been at DKJA for a decade now, teaching and inspiring our students through after school enrichment programs. This program grew to be very popular throughout the years, which is why Mizfit has become a full-time offering for our students. Our dance classes feature fun high-energy choreography taught using the latest Top 40 pop tunes and dance music. Hip-hop and jazz funk are forms of dance that showcase a dancer’s individual style and originality. Classes also consist of a warm-up to prepare the body for muscle isolations, strengthening exercises and core work. Students also work on stretching to increase flexibility and range of movement.

K-8 students can take dance as a free PE alternative as well as an aftercare program. When taking dance at DKJA, our students learn a variety of choreographed numbers throughout each semester. In addition, our Middle School students have the opportunity to be a part of the DKJA dance team run by Mizfit staff, where they perform at sport games and special events. This program at DKJA is an opportunity for our students to express themselves in a noncompetitive environment because not every child is comfortable on the courts and fields.

“Having the opportunity to be at DKJA has been extremely rewarding for me as my daughter is a student here,” Rosen said. “I am passionate about taking these students to new heights and watching them soar because dance is universal; everyone likes movement and music. I love to give our students the opportunity to express themselves in a different medium.”
